The Faith of Sahaba Karam vs. Today’s Ummah: Differences, Challenges, and Solutions

The Faith of Sahaba Karam vs. Today's Ummah: Differences, Challenges, and Solutions

Faith, or Imaan, is the foundation of a Muslim’s life. It directs our deeds, choices, and outcomes in this world and the next. The Sahaba Karam (Companions of the Prophet (PBUH)) is an example of unshakable faith deeply rooted in their submission to Allah and their love for the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Their sacrifices, strong belief, and devotion set the standard for all Muslims.

Conversely, when we associate their faith with the present-day Ummah, we notice a substantial deterioration. Materialism, worldly distractions, and a wearying association with Namos-e-Risalat (the honor of Prophethood) have led to a crisis in Imaan. Considering the key dissimilarities between the Sahaba Karam and present-day Muslims is crucial to revitalizing our faith and turning off the trials of the modern world.

Faith of Sahaba Karam (Companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH))

Complete Submission to Allah and His Messenger (PBUH)

The Sahaba Karam established complete submission to Allah and the instructions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). They did not enquire about divine guidelines but incorporated them passionately. Their belief was faith in words and actions—whether in prayer, charity, or jihad, they embraced every command with sincerity.

Unwavering Love for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

For Sahaba Karam, love for Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) surpassed worldly attachments. Their desires were secondary to his commands and depicted an extreme form of obedience.

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA) once sacrificed all his wealth for Islam. This proved that love for the Prophet (PBUH)  is such that faith is more precious than materialistic things.

Hazrat Umar (RA) went from being one of the most vigorous opponents of Islam to one of its strongest supporters. Therefore, such love for the Prophet (PBUH) changes hearts.

Sacrifices Made for Islam

The Sahaba Karam had faced immense hardships for Islam. They were persecuted, exiled, and even martyred, but their faith was not shaken. Hazrat Bilal (RA) was tortured under the burning sun for proclaiming Tawheed (Oneness of Allah), but he never deviated from his faith.

Examples of Their Devotion and Obedience

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA): Because of His instant faith in Isra wal Miraj (Prophet’s Night Journey), He received the title As-Siddique (The Truthful).

Hazrat Umar (RA): His bravery in openly committing to Islam, notwithstanding the threats of Quraysh, displayed his firm faith.

Hazrat Bilal (RA): His patience under torment, constantly saying Ahad! Ahad! (Allah is One!), signifies the power of faith.

Faith in Today’s Ummah: A Declining Standard?

Superficial Connection to Islam

Unlike the Sahaba Karam, most Muslims of today have a very weak link with Islam. Faith is usually performed out of tradition rather than conviction. Prayers, fasting, and religious duties are often done mechanically and not out of actual devotion.

Materialism and Worldly Distractions

So many distractions surround the modern world, be it wealth, fame, entertainment, or technology. Muslims often prioritize material and social gains in career success and prioritize ease above faith. Everyone always remembers the sacrifices Sahaba Karam made for Islam; many are not even willing to sacrifice a little time in fulfilling religious duties.

Weakening of Namos-e-Risalat Sentiments

This sense of pride and love towards Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was essential in their lives. These days, that feeling is becoming diluted in the Ummah. Most people refrain from voicing their concerns on Namos-e-Risalat because society can label them outcasts, and such a feeling cannot be considered within the vision of the Prophet’s Sahaba.

Examples of Faith Struggles in the Modern World

  • Muslims shunning Hijab or Islamic dress due to social pressure.
  • Fright of praying in public spaces or workplaces.
  • Unwillingness to stand up against Islamophobia.

Challenges Facing the Modern Ummah

Rise of Islamophobia and Anti-Islam Sentiments

Muslims today face discernment and hate globally. Compared to the Sahaba Karam, which openly safeguarded Islam, many modern Muslims panic by enthusiastically openly practicing their faith due to Islamophobia.

Lack of Proper Islamic Education

Many Muslims without proper religious knowledge follow cultural Islam rather than the true Islamic teachings. Sahaba Karam used to study the Quran deeply. Today, most people can barely read it regularly.

Influence of Secularism and Liberalism

Secular ideologies encourage living without religious values. Most youthful Muslims embrace Westernism, whose opposing Islamic teachings do not entrench with their beliefs.

Divisions Within the Muslim Community

Unlike the Sahaba Karam, who stayed unified under the shadow of Islam, today’s Ummah is separated based on sects, nationalism, and politics, further deteriorating their faith.

Engage in Islamic learning by attending lectures and reading authentic books.

The faith of the Sahaba Karam was a beacon of light, unwavering and deeply rooted in the love of Allah and His Messenger (PBUH). Today’s Ummah faces enormous challenges, but we can strengthen our Imaan by reconnecting with Islam, reviving the spirit of sacrifice, and standing united.

It is time to introspect. Do we give Islam the same priority as Sahaba Karam? Are we willing to sacrifice for our faith? The answer to these questions holds success for us both in this world and the hereafter.

Let’s revive our faith and start emulating Sahaba Karam’s footsteps for a rebuilding strong Ummah.
